Is reclosing considered a type of relay protection

Reclosing is a protection strategy in power systems where a relay-controlled device automatically restores service after a transient fault.Overview

Reclosing, often implemented via automatic reclosers (ARCs), is a specialized form of relay protection used in electric power distribution systems. It is designed to detect faults, interrupt the circuit, and automatically attempt to restore service if the fault is transient, such as those caused by lightning strikes, tree contact, or temporary line disturbances . Unlike standard circuit breakers, which require manual intervention after tripping, reclosers integrate protection relays with automatic reclosing logic to enhance system reliability .

How Reclosing Works
  1. Fault Detection & Trip: Protection relays (overcurrent, distance, or other types) sense abnormal current or voltage and trigger the circuit breaker to trip, typically within 20โ€“100 milliseconds .
  2. Dead Time Delay: A short delay (0.3โ€“1 second for overhead lines) allows the ionized air from the fault arc to dissipate .
  3. Reclosing Attempt: The recloser issues a closing command. If the fault has cleared, normal service resumes.
  4. Lockout Decision: If the fault persists (permanent fault), the recloser trips again and locks out, preventing further reclosing attempts. Standards typically allow 1โ€“4 reclose attempts .
Types of Reclosers

Reclosers can be classified based on their mechanism and control:

  • Hydraulic Reclosers: Use hydraulic mechanisms and preset trip curves, common in rural areas .
  • Electronic Reclosers: Solid-state controls with remote communication and precise customization .
  • Vacuum and SF6 Gas Reclosers: Use specialized arc-quenching methods for high-voltage applications .
  • Self-Powered Reclosers: Operate using line current, suitable for remote locations .
Role in Relay Protection

Reclosing is not a standalone relay but a protection strategy implemented through relays. The relays detect faults and coordinate the reclosing sequence, distinguishing between transient faults, which can be cleared automatically, and permanent faults, which require maintenance . By automatically restoring service after transient faults, reclosing reduces outage duration and improves reliability indices such as SAIFI and SAIDI .

Standards and Applications

Reclosers and automatic reclosing operations are governed by IEC 62271-111, IEC 62271-200, and IEEE C37.60/C37.104 standards . They are widely used in:

  • Overhead distribution networks
  • Industrial power systems
  • Renewable energy integration
  • Substation backup protection In summary, reclosing is a relay-based protection strategy that enhances power system reliability by automatically restoring service after transient faults while preventing repeated stress on equipment during permanent faults.
