Fiber Optic Cable Color Code Sort

Fiber optic cables follow a standardized color sequence for individual fibers and jackets, primarily based on the TIA-598-C standard, to ensure accurate identification and installation.Standard 12-Fiber Color Sequence

For most fiber optic cables, individual fibers are color-coded in the following 12-color sequence:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua This sequence is repeated for cables with more than 12 fibers, using a tube-and-fiber system where the outer buffer tube is assigned a color from the same sequence, and fibers inside the tube follow the same order. For example, in a 48-fiber cable, Fiber #34 would be the Violet fiber in the Green tube .
Extended Color Sequences

For 16-fiber MPO connectors or certain European standards, the sequence is extended as follows: 13. Olive 14. Magenta 15. Tan 16. Lime This allows identification of higher-density ribbon cables and specialized applications .

Cable Jacket Color Classification

Cable jackets are also color-coded to indicate fiber type and performance:

  • Yellow: Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2)
  • Orange: Multimode fiber (OM1/OM2)
  • Aqua: Laser-optimized multimode fiber (OM3/OM4)
  • Erika Violet: High-performance OM4 variant
  • Lime Green: OM5 multimode fiber for SWDM applications These jacket colors provide immediate visual identification of fiber type and compatibility, preventing mismatched connections and ensuring proper network performance .
Connector Color Coding

Connectors are also color-coded to match fiber type and polish:

  • Blue: Single-mode PC
  • Green: Single-mode APC
  • Beige: 62.5/125 µm multimode
  • Aqua: 50/125 µm laser-optimized multimode Strain relief boots and connector components maintain the same color as the fiber to ensure consistent identification throughout the connection interface .
Importance of Color Coding
  • Prevents errors during splicing, termination, and testing
  • Speeds up installation and maintenance in high-density networks
  • Supports large-scale deployments with up to 144 fibers per cable
  • Ensures compatibility across different manufacturers and standards By following the TIA-598-C color classification order, technicians can efficiently manage fiber optic networks, maintain system performance, and reduce costly troubleshooting.
