Layout of circuit breakers in distribution boxes

A typical distribution box arranges the main switch on the left, followed by RCDs or RCBOs, with MCBs for individual circuits connected to busbars, neutrals on a neutral bar, and earths on an earth bar.Key Components and Their Placement

Main Switch / Isolator: Positioned at the far left of the distribution box, the main switch disconnects both live and neutral conductors, allowing safe isolation of the entire installation for maintenance or emergencies . Residual Current Devices (RCDs / RCCBs) and RCBOs:

  • RCDs protect multiple circuits from earth leakage, typically placed immediately after the main switch.
  • RCBOs combine overcurrent and residual-current protection for individual circuits, often used in high-integrity boards to prevent nuisance tripping .
  • In split-load boards, circuits are divided across one or more RCDs, while RCBO-based layouts provide individual protection per circuit. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs): MCBs protect outgoing circuits against overload and short-circuit currents. High-power circuits (ovens, water heaters, EV chargers) are placed closer to the supply side, while low-power circuits (lighting, alarms) are positioned toward the far right to manage heat along the busbar . Busbars: Copper busbars run behind the breakers, distributing incoming power to all branch circuits. A comb-type busbar is preferred for safety and ease of connection . Neutral and Earth Bars:
  • Neutral bar: All neutral conductors from circuits connect here, or directly to RCBOs in RCBO-based boards.
  • Earth bar: All protective earth conductors terminate here, ensuring proper grounding . Surge Protective Devices (SPD): Installed on the supply side if a risk assessment indicates potential transient overvoltage, typically before the RCDs or RCBOs .
Layout Principles
  1. Left-to-right arrangement: Main switch → RCDs/RCBOs → MCBs.
  2. Circuit grouping: High-power circuits near the supply, low-power circuits at the far end.
  3. Heat management: Positioning breakers to allow airflow and prevent overheating.
  4. Clear labelling: Each circuit must be clearly identified on a chart or label near the board, as required by BS 7671 and IEC standards .
  5. Compliance: Boards must be type-tested assemblies (BS EN 61439-3) and constructed from non-combustible materials for domestic installations .
Summary

A well-organized distribution box ensures safe power distribution, easy maintenance, and compliance with electrical standards. The main switch isolates the supply, RCDs or RCBOs provide residual-current protection, MCBs protect individual circuits, and busbars, neutral, and earth bars manage connections efficiently. Proper layout, circuit grouping, and labelling are essential for safety, heat management, and fault diagnosis.
