How to Use a Fiber Optic Grating Strain Gauge

A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain gauge measures strain by detecting shifts in reflected light wavelength when the fiber is stretched or compressed.Understanding the Sensor

FBG strain gauges are optical sensors inscribed into a glass or silica fiber with a periodic pattern called a grating. When the fiber is subjected to strain, the spacing of the grating changes, which shifts the Bragg wavelength of reflected light. This shift is detected by an interrogator, which converts it into a precise strain measurement. FBG sensors are passive, immune to electromagnetic interference, and can be multiplexed along a single fiber for multiple measurement points .

Installation Steps
  1. Surface Preparation: Clean and smooth the surface of the material where the sensor will be applied. For flat surfaces, ensure no dust or grease remains.
  2. Sensor Attachment: Attach the FBG sensor using a suitable adhesive. For flat or slightly curved surfaces, epoxy adhesives are commonly used. Ensure the fiber is aligned along the direction of expected strain .
  3. Routing the Fiber: Carefully route the optical fiber to avoid sharp bends or stress points that could damage the fiber or affect measurements.
  4. Temperature Compensation: If temperature variations are expected, use a reference FBG that is isolated from mechanical strain to correct for temperature-induced wavelength shifts .
Measurement Procedure
  1. Connect to Interrogator: Connect the fiber to an optical interrogator, which sends a sweeping laser through the fiber and detects reflected wavelengths from each FBG .
  2. Calibration: Calibrate the system by applying known strains to the material and recording the corresponding wavelength shifts. This establishes the strain-to-wavelength relationship.
  3. Data Acquisition: Continuously monitor the reflected wavelengths. The interrogator converts wavelength shifts into strain values using the pre-determined calibration.
  4. Data Analysis: Analyze the strain data to assess mechanical stress, detect structural changes, or monitor dynamic loads. Multiple FBGs along a single fiber allow quasi-distributed sensing for large structures like bridges or aircraft components .
Advantages and Considerations
  • High Sensitivity: FBG sensors detect very small strains with high precision.
  • Harsh Environment Compatibility: They are immune to electromagnetic interference and can operate in extreme temperatures or radiation environments.
  • Multiplexing: Multiple sensors can be embedded along a single fiber, reducing wiring complexity.
  • Temperature Effects: Always account for temperature changes, as they also shift the Bragg wavelength. Using a reference sensor or compensation algorithm is essential . By following these steps, FBG-based fiber optic strain gauges can provide accurate, reliable strain measurements for structural health monitoring, laboratory experiments, and industrial applications.
