The Role of Deformable Fiber Optic Sensors

Deformable fiber optic sensors detect physical changes by converting mechanical deformation into measurable variations in light properties such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization.Principle of Operation

Deformable fiber optic sensors operate on the principle that mechanical deformation of the optical fiber—such as bending, stretching, or compression—alters the propagation of light within the fiber. These changes can be detected and quantified to measure physical parameters like strain, pressure, or displacement. The fiber itself can act as the sensing element (intrinsic sensor) or transmit light to an external sensing element (extrinsic sensor) .

Intrinsic Sensors

In intrinsic sensors, the fiber is directly affected by the measurand. Deformation changes the optical path length, refractive index, or induces microbending, which modulates the light's phase, intensity, or wavelength. For example, Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) reflect specific wavelengths that shift when the fiber is stretched or compressed, allowing precise strain or temperature measurements .

Extrinsic Sensors

Extrinsic sensors use the fiber primarily as a light conduit. The fiber transmits light to a remote transducer, where deformation is converted into a light modulation outside the fiber. The modulated light is then returned through the fiber for detection .

Interferometric Configurations

High-sensitivity deformable fiber optic sensors often employ interferometers, such as Michelson or Mach-Zehnder setups. In these configurations, deformation causes a phase shift between light traveling along different paths, which is detected as interference patterns. This allows extremely precise measurement of small displacements or bending .

Key Features
  • High sensitivity: Can detect minute deformations due to precise light modulation .
  • Electromagnetic immunity: Light-based sensing is unaffected by electrical noise .
  • Distributed sensing: Intrinsic fibers can provide measurements along the entire fiber length .
  • Harsh environment compatibility: Resistant to high temperature, corrosion, and vibration .
Applications

Deformable fiber optic sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring, aerospace, civil engineering, and industrial systems to measure strain, pressure, bending, and vibration. They are particularly valuable in environments where traditional electrical sensors are impractical due to electromagnetic interference or hazardous conditions . In summary, deformable fiber optic sensors convert mechanical deformation into measurable optical signals, leveraging intrinsic or extrinsic mechanisms, often enhanced by interferometric techniques, to provide high-precision, robust, and distributed sensing capabilities.
