Cable entry conduit into distribution box

Cables can enter a distribution box via threaded conduits or cable glands, with the choice depending on safety requirements, enclosure type, and compliance with standards like IEC 60079-01 and EN 60079-14.Methods of Cable Entry

1. Cable Glands (Direct Entry) Cable glands allow cables to enter directly into the distribution box while maintaining flameproof or explosion-proof integrity. In Ex d enclosures, the gland threads into the enclosure, anchoring and encapsulating the cable sheath. Individual conductors are then connected inside the box. Barrier glands seal around each conductor to prevent gas migration, while standard glands may use a sealing ring for general protection. Thread engagement must comply with IEC 60079-01, typically requiring at least six threads for proper flamepath integrity, and unused entries must be sealed with certified metal stoppers . 2. Conduit Systems (Indirect Entry) Cables can also enter through metal conduits, which are sealed with conduit fittings before connecting to the distribution box. This method is common in Zone 1 areas and provides mechanical protection and containment. The conduit system ensures that conductors are sealed within the metal pipe before entering the enclosure, maintaining the explosion-proof rating . Adaptors may be used if thread sizes differ, and proper alignment is critical to preserve flamepath length . 3. Ex e Terminal Boxes (Indirect via Increased Safety) An alternative is using an Ex e terminal box as an intermediate connection. Cables enter the terminal box with Ex e glands, which are easier to install and avoid on-site sealing operations. From the terminal box, connections are made to the Ex d distribution box, combining safety with installation convenience .

Key Considerations
  • Threaded Entries Only: Clearance entries are not permitted; all cable or conduit entries must be threaded to maintain flameproof integrity .
  • Sealing and IP Rating: Cable entries must maintain the enclosure's IP rating (typically IP66 or higher) to prevent dust or moisture ingress .
  • Zone Classification: The choice of entry method depends on the hazardous area classification (Zone 1, Zone 2, etc.) and the type of protection required (Ex d, Ex e, Ex i, Ex t), .
  • Unused Entries: Must be sealed with certified metal plugs or stoppers, engaged with at least five full threads .
  • Compliance Standards: Follow IEC 60079-01 for flameproof enclosures and EN 60079-14 for cable gland selection and installation .
Practical Tips
  • Ensure proper alignment of glands or conduits to avoid reducing flamepath length.
  • Avoid exceeding the number or size of entries specified in the enclosure certification.
  • Use adaptors or reducers only if certified and compatible with the enclosure threads.
  • For multiple conductors, consider barrier glands to prevent gas migration along the cable cores. By carefully selecting the entry method and following standards, cables can be safely introduced into distribution boxes while maintaining explosion-proof integrity and long-term reliability.
