Fiber optic communication relies on light as a carrier wave to transmit data over long distances with minimal loss and high bandwidth . Electrical signals, such as voice, video, or internet data, are first converted into light pulses using a light source like a laser diode or LED. These light pulses carry the information through the core of an optical fiber, which is made of ultra-pure glass or plastic .

Total Internal Reflection

The core of the fiber has a higher refractive index than the surrounding cladding. When light traveling in the core hits the boundary with the cladding at an angle greater than the critical angle, it is completely reflected back into the core. This phenomenon, called total internal reflection (TIR), ensures that light remains confined within the fiber and can travel long distances without escaping .

Signal Reception

At the receiving end, a photodetector converts the light pulses back into electrical signals. If the original input was analog, it is first digitized; the received signal is then amplified and decoded to reproduce the transmitted information accurately .

Fiber Construction and Types

Optical fibers consist of three main layers:

  • Core: Central region where light propagates.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to enable TIR.
  • Buffer Coating: Protects the fiber from mechanical and environmental damage . Fibers can be single-mode, allowing one light path for long-distance communication, or multi-mode, supporting multiple light paths for shorter distances .

  • High bandwidth for transmitting large amounts of data.
  • Long-distance transmission with low signal loss.
