Fiber optic heat shrink tubing connection

Fiber optic heat shrink tubing is applied by sliding it over the splice or pigtail, heating it evenly to shrink and seal, and allowing it to cool for a rigid, protective finish.Materials and Tools Needed
  • Fiber optic heat shrink tubing (polyolefin with inner adhesive and optional steel rod reinforcement)
  • Fiber stripper and cleaning tools
  • Fusion splicer or heat source (hot air gun or splicer oven)
  • Razor blade or precision cutter for trimming tubing
  • Splice tray or cable management system
Step-by-Step Process
  1. Prepare the Fiber Strip the protective layers of the fiber carefully to expose the bare glass, typically about 30mm. Remove the 900µm buffer and 250µm acrylate coating in small increments to avoid nicking the fiber, which can cause fractures and signal loss .
  2. Slide the Heat Shrink Tubing Before splicing, slide the heat shrink tubing onto the fiber or pigtail. Ensure the tubing is long enough to cover the splice and extend at least half an inch beyond the joint, as it can shrink up to 10% in length .
  3. Perform the Fusion Splice Fuse the bare fiber ends using a fusion splicer. This creates a precise, low-loss connection. Handle the fiber carefully to prevent contamination from dust, oils, or moisture .
  4. Position the Tubing Over the Splice After splicing, slide the heat shrink tubing so that it fully covers the fusion joint. If using reinforced tubing, ensure the steel rod or inner adhesive layer is properly aligned to provide mechanical strength .
  5. Apply Heat Evenly Use a hot air gun or the splicer's built-in oven to heat the tubing. Move the heat source in a back-and-forth motion while rotating the fiber to ensure uniform shrinkage. The tubing will shrink tightly around the splice, sealing it against moisture and environmental damage .
  6. Allow Cooling Let the tubing cool completely before handling or placing the fiber into a splice tray. Cooling solidifies the protective structure, creating a rigid, weather-resistant shield .
  7. Final Installation Dress the fiber into a splice tray, maintaining proper bend radius to avoid macro-bends that can degrade signal quality. Secure the fiber and tubing in place for long-term durability .
Tips for Best Results
  • Use clear tubing for easy inspection of the splice before shrinkage .
  • Avoid overheating, which can damage the fiber or tubing.
  • Ensure the tubing is cut cleanly to prevent fraying.
  • Choose tubing with appropriate shrink ratio and reinforcement for environmental conditions . By following these steps, fiber optic heat shrink tubing provides mechanical protection, moisture resistance, and long-term signal integrity for spliced or terminated fibers.
