1. Prepare the Fiber

  • Dip the fiber into the primer or adhesive as instructed, making sure the entire exposed fiber is coated. Avoid contact with Kevlar strands if present . 4. Insert Fiber into Connector
  • Carefully insert the fiber into the connector ferrule until it reaches the minimum usable depth line indicated by the manufacturer. Avoid pushing too far to prevent fiber breakage .
  • Ensure the fiber is straight and fully seated to minimize insertion loss. 5. Cure the Adhesive
  • Depending on the connector type, curing may be done at room temperature, with a heat source, or using a curing oven. Hot Melt connectors require heating to a specified temperature before cooling .
  • Allow sufficient curing time to ensure a strong bond between the fiber and ferrule. 6. Polish the Fiber End
  • After curing, polish the fiber end to achieve a smooth, flat surface. Proper polishing reduces back reflection and insertion loss .
  • Use the polishing techniques recommended for the connector type, as some connectors may require specific polishing films or machines. 7. Inspect and Test
  • Inspect the fiber end with a microscope to ensure there are no scratches, chips, or debris.
  • Test the optical connection for insertion loss and return loss to confirm proper termination.

  • Always follow the connector manufacturer's instructions for adhesive type, curing method, and fiber insertion depth .
  • Keep the work area clean to prevent contamination, which can significantly increase signal loss .
