Underlying optical cable

An optical cable consists of a core, cladding, coating, strengthening fibers, and an outer jacket, all designed to transmit light signals efficiently while protecting the fragile fibers.Core

The core is the central part of the optical fiber where light signals travel. It is typically made of ultra-pure silica glass (SiO2) and may include dopants like germanium to enhance the refractive index. The core's diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers have cores around 8–10 microns, while multimode fibers range from 50–62.5 microns. The core's high transparency ensures minimal signal loss over long distances, enabling high-speed data transmission .

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer with a lower refractive index that keeps light confined within the core through total internal reflection. This ensures that light signals travel efficiently without escaping, maintaining signal integrity over long distances .

Coating

The coating or buffer layer protects the core and cladding from physical damage, moisture, and microbending. It is usually made of acrylate polymer or similar materials and does not affect the optical properties but provides mechanical protection during handling and installation .

Strengthening Fibers

To enhance durability, optical cables include strengthening fibers such as aramid yarn (Kevlar) or fiberglass. These fibers absorb tension and prevent stretching, especially in outdoor or underground installations, ensuring the cable remains intact under mechanical stress .

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket is the protective sheath that encases all internal components. It shields the cable from environmental hazards like UV exposure, moisture, and abrasion. Depending on the application, jackets can be designed for indoor, outdoor, or armored use, providing additional protection against crushing or rodent damage .
