Fiber optic cable replaces electrical cable

Fiber optic cables do not conduct electricity, making them immune to electrical interference and safer in environments prone to electrical hazards. The optical fiber elements are typically individually coated with plastic layers and contained in a protective tube. Fiber optic cables are built with a silica glass fiber core, about the width of a human hair. It transmits data via light, by allowing it to bounce back and forth down the length of the glass core, while a glass cladding surrounds the core and ensures the light is retained within it. However, modern networks often combine both technologies. There are two types of these cables, OPGW (optical power ground wire) and OPPC (Optical power phase conductor) cables.
