Design of Fiber Optic Sensor Speed Measurement System

Abstract: In this paper, a fiber optic sensor system (FOSS) is proposed for the measurement of the rotational speed of a DC motor. It offers non-contact measurements. FODS is an intensity modulation based extrinsic type. Determination of speed is an important requirement in a wide variety of technical and industrial applications. The measurement of speed has evolved from pure mechanical to magnetoelectric and radio frequency (RF) based devices. These advantages are essentially related to the optical fiber properties, i., small, lightweight, resistant to high temperatures and pressure, electromagnetically passive, among others. Due to its small size, low cost and ease of fabrication leading it to replace traditional sensors which were used frequently before th birth of fiber optic sensors.
