How to configure the fiber optic cable distribution box on each floor

To configure a fiber optic distribution box on each floor, mount the box securely, route and splice the cables carefully, and manage fibers to prevent bending or signal loss.Step 1: Choose the Appropriate Distribution Box

Select a fiber distribution box (FDB) suitable for your environment. For indoor floors, use indoor FDBs designed for controlled conditions, protecting against dust and minor impacts. Ensure the box has sufficient capacity for the number of fibers you plan to distribute and is compatible with your network infrastructure .

Step 2: Mount the Distribution Box
  • Install the brackets on both sides of the FDB.
  • Fix the brackets to the designated wall or rack location using screws.
  • Ensure the installation direction allows easy access to the front panel for maintenance .
  • Use a bubble level to make sure the box is level and stable .
Step 3: Introduce Fiber Optic Cables
  • Feed the main optical cable into the box through the cable inlet hole.
  • Use a grommet or sheath to secure the cable and prevent movement.
  • For branch connections, use pre-terminated fiber jumpers or pigtails .
Step 4: Splicing and Connection
  • Strip 2–3 inches of the protective jacket from incoming fibers using a fiber jacket stripping tool.
  • Clean fibers with 99% isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes.
  • Use a precision cleaver to cut fibers at 90-degree angles.
  • Perform fusion splicing to connect incoming fibers to pigtails or adapter panels inside the FDB .
Step 5: Fiber Management
  • Route fibers carefully to avoid exceeding the bend radius, which can cause signal loss.
  • Use cable ties and bending radius clips to secure fibers within the box.
  • Ensure the fiber length allows the front panel to be fully pulled out without tension on the cables .
  • Label each fiber clearly for easy identification and troubleshooting .
Step 6: Testing and Maintenance
  • Test each connection for signal integrity and minimal loss.
  • Conduct quarterly inspections to check for dust, wear, or corrosion.
  • Replace or upgrade components as needed to maintain optimal performance . By following these steps, each floor's fiber optic distribution box will be securely installed, well-organized, and ready for reliable network distribution, ensuring efficient connectivity and ease of maintenance.
