Optical splitter switch module

To connect a switch's optical module to an optical splitter, insert the module correctly, clean all connectors, and securely mate the fiber to the splitter while following proper orientation and handling procedures.Step 1: Prepare the Optical Module
  • Remove the dust plugs from the optical module ports on the switch .
  • Identify the correct orientation of the module. For QSFP+ modules, the top side may have an L-shaped recess; ensure it faces the correct direction depending on the port type .
  • Insert the optical module into the switch port until you hear a click, confirming it is securely seated .
Step 2: Prepare the Optical Fibers
  • Remove dust caps from both the fiber connectors and the splitter ports .
  • Clean all connectors using a fiber optic cleaning tool to remove dust or contaminants, which can cause signal loss or permanent damage .
  • Avoid looking directly into the fiber or module, as laser light can be invisible and harmful to the eyes .
Step 3: Connect to the Splitter
  • Align the fiber connector with the input port of the optical splitter and insert it gently until it clicks .
  • For splitters with multiple outputs, connect each output fiber to the corresponding ONUs or distribution ports, keeping dust caps on unused ports .
  • Ensure the split ratio and insertion loss are considered; higher split ratios (e.g., 1x32) require higher-power optical modules to maintain signal strength .
Step 4: Cable Management
  • Bundle fibers using fiber binding tapes at intervals of 20–30 cm to prevent tangling or stress on the connectors .
  • Route fibers through cable management frames to maintain organization and reduce bending stress.
Step 5: Verification
  • After all connections are made, verify that the optical signals are being transmitted correctly. Check the link status on the switch and ensure the farthest ONUs receive sufficient signal power . Following these steps ensures a reliable, safe, and efficient connection between the switch's optical module and the optical splitter, minimizing insertion loss and protecting the integrity of the fiber network.
